Bull and Kraftway announce a technology agreement

The Russian IT leader chooses Bull's innovative FAME architecture, upon which the new NovaScale™ server family is built, to develop its own multi processor high performance server series

Paris — Moscow
December 10, 2003

Today Bull and Kraftway have announced a major five-year OEM agreement based on the following terms:

  • Bull will provide Kraftway with servers based on Intel® Itanium® 2 processors and FAME (Flexible Architecture for Multiple Environments) technology, upon which the NovaScale™ server family is built;
  • Kraftway will secure the servers adaptation to Russian customer needs and promote the hardware under its own G-Scale brand;
  • Bull will provide Kraftway with technical and service support.
The agreement becomes effective on the Russian territory only. The financial and other conditions of the agreement have not been disclosed.

"We are pleased to announce the first OEM agreement on our FAME technology with the leading Russian IT player Kraftway. The agreement will enable us to accelerate the promotion of FAME architecture on the Russian market. It proves once again Bull engineers' uniqueness on the European scene as the developers of high performance servers based on open architecture and shows their tremendous technology potential," — says Pierre Bonelli, Bull Chairman and CEO.

"Kraftway aims to enter the multi processor server market and further develop its Intel-based 64-bits server series. We have chosen FAME architecture as the basis for the new family of our servers since it provides for the utilization of all the advantages of Intel® Itanium® processors and guarantees the flexibility, scalability, fault tolerance, and cost-attractiveness our customers need," — says Alexey Koudriavtsev, Kraftway Computers CEO.

"We are pleased to realize that two of our strategic clients have come to an agreement which will contribute to the Intel® Itanium® architecture promotion in Russia. Kraftway potential and using the Bull FAME technology prepare the ground for considerable success," — says Mike Fister, Vice President and General Manager of Intel Enterprise Platform Group. "This agreement provides another striking illustration of Intel® Itanium® platform European expansion, since IT managers give closer attention to the performance, manageability and cost advantages of Intel® Itanium® 2-based servers."

Focus on the Intel® Itanium® family use is the cornerstone of Bull server strategy to secure its position as a leader of the European IT market. In March 2003 Bull announced the production of Bull NovaScale™, a new generation of high performance servers based on FAME architecture and Intel® Itanium® processors. At the heart of FAME technology is the use of standard hardware. This technology is a breakthrough in the development of high performance servers for critical applications execution and price-to-performance ratio improvement.

During a nine-month period since their market launch, Bull NovaScale™ servers have won the recognition of the large corporate market. The servers are mostly used for data storages development and high performance computations.

Kraftway, a leading Intel-based server manufacturer, focuses its research & production activities on the development of ahigh performance server series. Kraftway became the first Russian company to produce Intel® Itanium® 2-based servers in 2002 and highly integrated GEG Express Blade systems in 2003.

With the announcement of its G-Scale systems, Kraftway extends the present nomenclature of high level server hardware and offers large corporate and government customers in Russia a powerful, reliable, cost-effective data center solution as well as a unique service package.

In April 2003, Kraftway and Intel opened the Center for Server Solutions, aimed to support Russian clients switching to 64-bit architecture. In the future, the Center's resources and accumulated expertise will provide a substantial addition to the advantages that Kraftway is able to offer to its clients.
